What is a Leporello?
A type of bindingless printed publication, in the form of a sheet (or strip) of thick paper or cardboard, folded multiple times, in parallel, alternately, into the form of an accordion. The leporello format is used in fairy tales, folders, programmes, prospectuses, etc. It can also be a bound publication, glued in the form of cardboard cards joined by strips of textile material. The cardboard cards are covered with thin paper, most often pre-printed. Successive spines are glued on opposite sides of the print. This type of publication in the leporello format is classified as a book. Today these are most commonly children’s books, though in the past sheet music, prayer books and atlases were published in this way.
Workshop objectives
Leporello is also used in education or as a promotion of reading. Art workshops aim to develop the creativity, imagination and artistic skills of participants through creating illustrations and folding them into the form of a leporello book. They can also be combined art and literary workshops. Creating illustrations for a publication, learning the printing process, preparation for print. Broadening abstract thinking, introducing illustration techniques, applying lettering.
